Lyrics > Eat Your Books (And Read Your Vegetables)

Eat Your Books (And Read Your Vegetables)
By: Mr. Seley

They say a good book will rot your brains…Wait a minute
Oh yeah, I forgot, that’s television and video games
They say ice cream and cake will make me grow up so big and strong…Wait a minute
Oh yeah, I should eat fruits and vegetables all day long

I am so clearly confused
But when I get like this
There’s a snappy little jingle that I like to use

Eat your books and read your vegetables
Take my advice if you wanna be respectable
Pick your nose and never do your chores
Wait a minute now there’s a little bit more
Study really hard for your video games
And call your little brother all kinds of names…oh, that’s not right

They say I should stay inside and never go out to play…Wait a minute
If I stay inside all day, my muscles will waste away
They say I should I pick on my friends as often as I can…Wait a minute
If I pick on my friends they’ll probably leave and not come back again

I am so clearly confused
But when I get like this
There’s a snappy little jingle that I like to use

Eat your books and read your vegetables
Take my advice if you wanna be respectable
Pick your nose and never do your chores
Wait a minute now there’s a little bit more
Study really hard for your video games
And call your little brother all kinds of names…oh, that’s not right

Oh no, I really made a mess of things this time…Wait a minute
If I concentrate I know all words will just fall in line
I’ll just say everything I know and I’m sure it’ll turn out fine...that’s the ticket
Everybody can help out, we’re all gonna count down from 9

8, 7, 6, 5
4, 3, 2, 1

Read your books and eat your vegetables
Take my advice if you wanna be respectable
Do your chores and never pick your nose
Yeah, I got it now. I know that’s how it goes
Study really hard cuz school’s not a game
And never call your brother any kinda of names… I think I got it that time

[Key change]
Read your books and eat your vegetables
Take my advice if you wanna be respectable
Do your chores and never pick your nose
Yeah, I got it now. I know that’s how it goes
Study really hard cuz school’s not a game
And never call your brother any kinda of names

Yeah yeah yeah
Oh oh oh
Oh oh oh

You’re So Wonderful (You Should Live in a Castle)
By: Mr. Seley

You’re so wonderful
You should live in a castle
But I’m sure that the taxes
Would be a great big hassle
So you’d move to a small house
To be a bit more comfortable
But no matter where you lay your head,
I still think you’re wonderful

Hey there, look who rolled in
You have no idea what kinda cards you’re holdin’
I hope all your chances turn out to be golden
You might think you’re cool, but I think you’re frozen

Chorus

I don’t know if you know that you’re made of stardust
Whether your ridin’ in a limousine or on the city bus
You just do your own thing, never make a fuss
And when it comes to being kind, I think you’re a genius

Chorus

The laughter echoes round from all the joy you bring
And on the weekend, I’m sure you take time out to teach the birds to sing
You’d help out anyone out with just about anything
This song goes out to all the kids that do their own thing

You’re so wonderful (who me?)
You should live in a castle (which one?)
But I’m sure that the taxes
Would be a great big hassle (oh no!)
So you’d move to a small house (why’s that?)
To be a bit more comfortable (sounds good!)
But no matter where you lay your head.
I still think you’re wonderful (yee ha!)

It Was The Best Day Every
By: Mr. Seley

Woke up with the sun
Looked at the clock it was 7:01
Rolled over-went back to bed
Woke up around eleven with a crazy case of bed head
Threw on a hat to hide the mess
Popped the collar on my shirt ’cause I dress for success
Stylin’ and smilin’ from ear to ear.
And if you feel like it, sing the chorus right here now

It was the best day ever
And I’ll remember it forever
I hope that every other day I have
Is this good or better

Called up my brother Dave
We met downtown for hash browns and eggs
Then we drove over to the DIA
Looked at Van Gogh and then the Claude Monet
My impression was that everything was all right–
Sun shinin’ bright and we’re only hittin’ green lights
Everybody loves it when the words all rhyme.
And if you like to sing along, you know there’s never been a better time

It was the best day ever
And I’ll remember it forever
I hope that every other day I have
Is this good or better

And, if you know me, you know we had to go climbing
Allyssa and Bill just stopped on a dime and
Met me at the wall and it was all well known
That we’d stop to get sushi on the way back home
I ate some maguro and some ikura
Then I yelled out, “Gotchi-sama so deshita.”
I drove home and I wrote this song
And if you like the chorus, go ahead and sing along now.

It was the best day ever
And I’ll remember it forever
I hope that every other day I have
Is this good or better

My Fish Ran Away
By: Mr. Seley

This is a song about a fish named Rufus and his quest for freedom

My fish ran away
My fish ran away
Rufus and I were the best of friends
I fed him ev-e-ry day…ev-e-ry day

Living alone had me searchin’ for a boarder
So I bought him at the pet store for three dollars…and a quarter
I walked out the shop on a bright and shiny summer morning
And then he left me on a cold dark day without warning…take warning!

My fish ran away
My fish ran away
Rufus and I were the best of friends
I fed him ev-e-ry day…ev-e-ry day

I don’t even know why he wanted to go
I gave him everything that a fish could want…He even told me so
We used to talk over breakfast, talk a little more over lunch
Chew the fat, chitter chat, talk about this and that and then such and such…oh it’s too much

My fish ran away
My fish ran away
Rufus and I were the best of friends
I fed him ev-e-ry day…ev-e-ry day

The yearning for freedom strikes deep in all of our hearts
Saying goodbye to the ones we love is the hardest part
He could have at least left a note for me to find
Now I’ll never find out what happened to that good friend of mine (All I know is…)

My fish ran away
My fish ran away
My fish ran away
My fish ran away

Maybe you can help me with this next part:
I have sneaking suspicion that Rufus is out there somewhere
And that if we just let him know that he’s welcome back at any time
The fishbowl is waiting on the counter and we’ve got some food for him in
a half-full thing of fish food (that’s not too far past it’s expiration date).
That maybe, just maybe, if he knows that we all miss him very much
He’ll return to the fish bowl on the counter and I can bring him to the class and he can be the class pet. We’ll make him the class pet. We’d even make him the class president. We’d make him the President. Rufus for president!!!

Repeat after me:

Rufus come back
Rufus come back

Bring it on back
Bring it on back

Take a train if you need to
Take a train if you need to

We really wanna see you
We really wanna see you

Yeah, I think it’s gonna work.

My fish ran away
My fish ran away
My fish ran away
My fish ran away

Money In The Bank
By: Mr. Seley

Na na na na na oh oh oh
Put your money in the bank and watch it grow
Saving up is a game you’ve got to play slow
Put your money in the bank and watch it grow

Put the dollar in your pocket take my advice
With a dollar in you pocket you smile so nice
With a dollar in your pocket you look so cool
With a dollar in your pocket you sing better too

Chorus

When I see a penny, I always pick it up.
Take it back to my house and put it in a cup
And, when I get enough change, I roll it all up
Take it over to the bank and do you-know-what

Chorus

Drum breakdown

Scorching solo

Chorus

They pay interest on the money I save
It’s like makin’ money from the money I made
And, it’s good money, so use your good cents
Cuz one day you’re gonna have to pay your own rent

Chorus

When On Earth
By: Mr. Seley

When on Earth, do what the humans do
When you’re in outer space
Do whatever you want to

If you find yourself out in the stars, feel free just to stand around
Even if there’s an MC in the place yellin’, “Jump up and get down.”
It’s just the Universe anyway–and like the Earth–
If we ignore it for long enough, it’ll go away.

Chorus

You’ll never know all the places you’ll go
Get on the right plane, and end up in Tokyo
I went from Farmington to Japan and back again
From someone else that looked like me to who I am

Chorus

I disagree with those that say there’s only so many smiles
A journey a-cross mine would take you for miles and miles
And never again will I ever be so sure to say
It’s just the universe anyway…

Don’t Take My Hat
By: Mr. Seley

You could take my money
You could take my credit cards
You could take everything I own in this whole wide world
It wouldn’t be that hard
You could take my socks
You could take my shoes
You could tell me what I call reality is just a ruse

But don’t take my hat
Leave it on my head
It keeps my forehead from turnin’ red
It keeps the rain from pourin’ down
It’s the original American crown

You could take my house
You could take my car
You could take my laptop
You could take my guitar (well, maybe not the guitar)
You could take my television set
So shiny and new
You could take my cable box
And a coupla old cans of soup

Chorus

The one thing I learned from all this is that if you have a hill to climb,
Waiting won’t make it any smaller.
And if you ain’t met yer match ya ain’t looked hard enough
They tell me that a wishbone ain’t no substitute for a backbone, and I believe it’s true
Any cowboy can carry a tune. The trouble just comes when he tries to unload it.
And–when in doubt–let your horse do the thinkin’

Chorus

Chorus

Best Friend (The Dog Song)
By: Mr. Seley

You can scratch your own back
You don’t have fleas
You stand up in my defense
When they make fun of me
You brush your own teeth
You don’t bark a lot
You don’t have a crazy name
Like Bingo, Fido or Spot

Dogs are good and dogs are nice
But they never spoke up and gave me good advice
You can take ’em for walks and there’s tricks they can do
But I would rather hang out with you

They say that a dog is a man’s best friend
But my best friend is you

When you fall
It’s always nice to have a friend
To be there when you hit the ground
To pick you back up again
Like when my car broke down
I knew all I had to do was call your phone
If you were a dog,
I would to had to hoof it on home alone

Chorus

Solo Verse

Chorus

You can roll over once
But you don’t play dead
You have all kinds of brains and thoughts
Rollin’ around in your head
We have the funniest conversations
Laughin’ all day long
I thought about just sayin’ it
But it sounds better in a song
And if you like it you can sing along

Double Chorus

If I Was an Oyster
By: Mr. Seley

If I was an oyster, I’d close right up and be shy
Down there at the bottom the deep blue sea
Mindin’ my own business while the fish, they go swimmin’ by
Frolicking around all above me

Life’s too short to be shy
It’s over in the blink of an eye
It’s a fabulous world
Full of all kinds of people
You can get to know them in good time
You can get to know them in good time

When I was a kid, I used to sit at the side of the playground
And watch all the kids playin’ games and runnin all around
Then the bell would ring and we would line up–go inside
I would think I could’ve made some friends if I just tried (if I just tried)

Chorus

They say the best time to plant a tree was twenty years ago
But the second best time is right now today
Crawlin’ out of your shell can be slow–I know
But, if your try, you’ll blink and bashfulness will just wash away

Chorus

Chorus

Why is the Grass So Green?
By: Mr. Seley

Why is the grass so green?
Why is the sky so blue?
How do the stars twinkle like they do?
Let me tell you…

Okay, let’s start with the grass: The grass is everywhere…and it’s green. It’s green because grass has a chemical in it called chlorophyll. Chlorophyll is what nourishes the plants through a process called photosynthesis. Photosynthesis is how plants use sunlight to make food. The funny thing is plants can use the entire spectrum of visible light, but not green. So, green is the color that reflects back into our eyes. And that’s why grass appears green. Other important facts about grass include that it has a very complicated root structure. There are many types of grass, including cool season grasses, like bent grass, blue grass, perennial rye grass.

Chorus

Okay, so next up is the sky. The sky is the atmosphere. And it’s filled with gasses, like nitrogen and oxygen....and a little bit of water vapor too. Light travels really fast from the sun–all the way across the solar system to our planet Earth. And it travels at, uh, the speed of light. And when the lights hits the atmosphere the gases and the water vapor scatter the blue light all over the places, so everything above us looks blue–and that’s why the sky is blue.

Now, as you probably noticed the sky is not always blue. During sunsets and sunrises the sky can turn the most vivid shades of red, yellow, orange, and sometimes even purple. This phenomenon is the subject of another song altogether. But, just to touch lightly on the subject…

Chorus

Alright, finally, the stars. The stars are super far away. And the light from the stars travels at, um, yup, the speed of light. The twinkle that we see at night is caused by the atmosphere above us because the atmosphere is moving and swishing all around. This makes the light go this way and that way, so it looks like it’s twinkling. And, that’s why we say stars twinkle. Another interesting thing you should know about what you see in the sky is that if you see a really bright light that is not twinkling, it might be a planet, like–for example–Mars or Venus, because the light that is reflect from these planets comes from Earth. So, I hope that the next time you go out in the night sky you look up at the these stars and you think about all the…

Once Upon Another Time
By: Mr. Seley

Once upon another time
I witnessed a butterfly
Drying off his tinted wings
And heave himself into the sky
He said, “Today is my big goodbye.
You see I’m leavin’ my old-time cocoon behind.”
You know that what goes up falls down
And sooner or later we all come around
Like a boomerang…that never hits the ground
We go around and around and come back with what we found

Change is coming, it’s on my mind
Change is coming, you can’t rewind
Time has a rhythm; history rhymes
Change is coming, don’t get left behind

Recognize, we metamorphisize
And see the same world from very different eyes
From the tadpole swimming to the frog hop hopping
Everything’s changin’ and it’s all non-stoppin’
From the chick to the chicken, from the ocean to the kitchen
Be the fish or go fishin’, livin’ life like a mission
Subtracting by addition. Multiply and divide
And remember: nothing’s constant but the ocean’s tide

Change is coming, it’s on my mind
Change is coming, you can’t rewind
Time has a rhythm; history rhymes
Change is coming, don’t get left behind
